Raheem Sterling shot a fabulous freekick against Newcastle

Sterling struck a spectacular free kick in Chelsea's 4-1 defeat against Newcastle.

At St. James’ Park, Chelsea trailed Newcastle United 1-0 after Alexander Isak scored in the 13th minute. Kieren Trippier fouled Raheem Sterling, who was about to score, in the 22nd minute. He received a yellow card for his foul, but the foul now cost him extra.

Raheem Sterling struck a stunning free-kick after being fouled well beyond the box to tie the game. Sterling scored with his right foot, shooting the ball over the wall and into the top right corner. Nick Pope could only stand there and watch the ball enter the goal.

The half ended 1-1, with no changes in the score. The Blues’ true problems arrived in the second half, when Jamaal Lascelles, Joelinton, and Antony Gordon extended Newcastle’s advantage to 4-1. In addition, their captain, Reece James, was sent off after receiving his second yellow card for fouling Gordon. Newcastle won by three points at the end of the game.

Ever since Chelsea was bought by a consortium led by American Todd Boehly, Chelsea has been active in the transfer market. Since the start of the 2022/23 season, the Blues have purchased over a billion euros worth of players, with Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandes costing a combined EUR 237 million.

So, what is Chelsea’s problem? When supporters see Mauricio Pochettino’s team play, they observe that everything when attacking is correct. They have a good attacking structure, and the midfield and attack can produce opportunities, but they are still one of the league’s worst attacking sides in terms of Expected Goals.
