Argentina defeats Brazil 1-0 on home ground
On Wednesday, the Albiceleste and the Selecao met at the Maracana. The away team managed to pull away with all three points in a tense match. After a clash in the stands delayed kick-off, an invigorated Brazil hoped to overcome Argentina, who they were winless against in their last 4 meetings. In a game that was witness to over 40 fouls, Nicolas Otamendi grabbed the winner.
Brazil’s missing opportunities eventually caught up with them in the 63rd minute. To meet Giovani Lo Celso’s swinging cross, Nicolas Otamendi jumped above Gabriel Jesus and André. His header beat Alisson and nestled in the top left corner.
Brazil’s sole chance to equalize went to Gabriel Martinelli, who sent a shot straight at Emiliano Martnez. The game concluded 1-0 in favor of the visitors, marking the first time in Brazil’s history that they had lost consecutive World Cup qualifiers. Argentina now leads CONMEBOL qualifying with 15 points from six games.
