Leeds United would want to recruit Freddie Woodman, although they have competition from Rangers for the services of the former goalkeeper for Newcastle United.
According to The Scottish Sun, Woodman, an ace for Preston North End, is getting a lot of attention. With Michael Beale looking for a new starting goalkeeper, rumours have circulated that Rangers are interested in bringing Woodman to Ibrox for £3.5 million.
Despite that, two English Premier League teams, Leeds and Leicester City have been said to be interested as well.
Despite having only signed Woodman last summer, PNE is reportedly willing to sell at the end of the season. It’s likely that scouts from Rangers and Leeds were there at PNE’s 0-0 draw with Coventry City on Tuesday to keep an eye on Woodman.
Newcastle United has always believed in Woodman’s potential. With the Under-20 World Cup title in 2017, England’s 25-year-old seemed poised for great things.
Newcastle was pleased to see Woodman go for Preston North End last summer since he never really made the cut there. Since then, Woodman has been one of PNE’s most consistent players and a quality goalkeeper in the Championship.
Woodman probably wouldn’t want to be Leeds’s backup goalkeeper, so the club’s possible interest in him comes as a surprise. Yet, with Illan Meslier on the outs, the door might be opened.
But Woodman may feel he needs a second chance for Premier League glory. Magpies manager Eddie Howe told the Northern Echo in May 2022 that Woodman is an “excellent” goalkeeper, but it didn’t work out with Newcastle. One would assume that Woodman would get another shot at the Premier League at some point, and Leeds might very well make their move at the conclusion of the season to do so.
