Inter Milan anticipates a decision from Stefan de Vrij on his future at San Siro over the next nine days
Inter Milan anticipates a decision from Stefan de Vrij on his future at San Siro over the next nine days. After hearing that Newcastle United is interested in acquiring his services, the defender is weighing his options.
According to Calciomercato, Inter Milan is keeping their fingers crossed that they can convince De Vrij to remain. This next summer marks the end of his contract with the Serie A club, thus he is free to pursue other opportunities. The Nerazzurri have offered to keep the 30-year-old at the club on the same terms.
After signing a five-year deal with Inter Milan as a free agent in July 2018, De Vrij has been a key member of the team ever since. The Dutchman had waited for his contract at Lazio to end before making the transition to a different team in Italy’s top division. His outlook on life has changed, and he is eager to go on new adventures.
De Vrij has shown an interest in joining a Premier League club if he decides to leave this summer. Inter Milan recognizes that a new contract with him would be significant not just for him but also for his career as a whole.
The time for making a choice, though, is rapidly diminishing in the eyes of sports director Piero Ausilio and chairman Giuseppe Marotta. It is expected that they will find out within the next nine days if De Vrij will remain with the club and extend his £117k-a-week term or whether the 59-cap defender will seek new opportunities elsewhere.
Despite the attractive financial offer from Inter Milan, De Vrij has not postponed making a choice on his future with the club. Having slid down Simone Inzaghi’s pecking order, he wants to make his next move based on the sports qualities alone. Twelve of their 21 Serie A games this season have included him.
Teams from the Premier League have shown interest in him as of late due to the fact that his current contract will expire in 2023. It was reported by L’Interista that Newcastle had contacted Federico Pastorello, De Vrij’s agent, about a possible move in the month of January. Also, Tottenham Hotspur has been mentioned by CalcioMercatoWeb as having interest.
However, in the midst of the season, De Vrij was the most eager to go to Newcastle from Inter Milan. Towards the end of trading, Orazio Accomando of DAZN reported that the Toon had made a significant bid. Even though AC Milan was interested, De Vrij turned them down.
Due to his admiration for Inter Milan, De Vrij refused to sign with AC Milan. This new opportunity at Newcastle might give the defender a taste of the Premier League next year. Also, Eddie Howe may not have to wait too much longer to find out whether the defender will sign on.
