Manchester City had agreed to a fee in order to buy Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig on Wednesday. With this, they added to their team one of the hottest prodigies in the defence position currently in world football.
Gvardiol completed the earlier stages of his medical on Wednesday with the remaining part of his medical tests expected to be completed by the latter half of this week. The young Croatian who is a centre-half player can also play as a left-back. Despite having a contract until 2027 with Leipzig, he made up his mind to join City midway.
Gvardiol might become the highest-earning defender in history with £90 million to his name
Josko Gvardiol following his move to City is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid defender ever in the history of the game. City shall be paying a sum of £90 million (£104 million) to Leipzig for the Croatian player. For the 3rd time in the same window, RB Leipzig breaks its record for the biggest sale.
Gvardiol will top the list containing some more renowned names of defenders in football history over the years. Harry Maguire’s transfer to United for £87 million currently sits at the top of the list. Mathias De Ligt’s move to Juventus for £85.5 million is second. At the third position is Virgil Van Dijk who made a move to Liverpool for a sum of £84.65 million.
Gvardiol who began his earlier career at Dinamo Zagreb and followed it up with a couple of good seasons at RB Leipzig. Gvardiol at the age of 21 will be joining a star studded City side that consists of names like Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, Aymeric Laporte and many others at the central defender’s position.
His presence is certainly going to strengthen the defence even further. It remains to be seen as to how Pep Guardiola manages to help him fit into his system and this makes the most of his abilities on the pitch. City fans will be expecting the highest paid defender in the history of the game to live up to his high price tag hereon.
