Gini Wijnaldum signs as new Al Ettifaq player

The Netherlands international is all set to feature in the Saudi Arab side Al Ettifaq for the upcoming season after successfully signing a three-year contract with them. The Saudi Arab club will be paying €10m to the ex-Liverpool midfielder. The 32-year-old had spent the last season on loan at Roma but featured just 23 times in all competitions in an injury-hit campaign that saw his role diminish. Now he has completed his medicals successfully to join his new side after spending one season with PSG.

PSG midfielder Gini Wijnaldum to move to Al Ettifaq

Gini Wijnaldum has been seeking a transfer to reinvent himself and get some consistent starting minutes. It was reported that PSV and Ajax were interested in the midfielder initially the former Liverpool midfielder. But the Saudi Pro League has been welcoming European talents into their league.

Gini started his career with Feyenoord back in 2006 and was associated with the club for five seasons. He featured in 111 games and scored 23 goals.

In 2011, the technical director of Feyenoord announced the club had reached a transfer deal for Wijnaldum reported to be worth €5 million with PSV. He made his debut for PSV in a 3-1 loss against AZ. He played a total of four seasons featuring in 109 matches scoring 40 goals.

In 2015, Wijnaldum joined English Premier League club Newcastle United on a five-year contract, for a reported transfer fee of £14.5 million, making him the most expensive signing of Mike Ashley’s ownership. He made 38 appearances in his first season in the Premier League scoring 11 goals for his side.

He then signed a long term five-year contract, for an initial £23 million with Liverpool. He made a total of 237 appearances for Liverpool scoring 22 goals in his tenure of five seasons.

In 2021, Wijnaldum signed a three-year contract with Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). He played one season for PSG and was loaned the next season to Roma. He made 31 appearances for PSG scoring 1 goal and 14 appearances for Roma scoring 2 goals.

He has featured in 90 international matches for his national side and has scored 27 international goals in his career.  He is all set to join his new Saudi Arab side Al Ettifaq for the upcoming seasons.
