FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 – Germany vs South Korea – Match Report
Germany were held to a 1-1 draw by South Korea in their final group stage match at the Brisbane stadium. Following this draw, Germany could only finish third in the table with 4 points to its name in 3 games. Germany failed to make it to the knockouts of the World Cup for the first time in their history. South Korea on the other hand too didn’t qualify for the round of 16 stages following some extremely average performances throughout this World Cup campaign of theirs.
The game began with both the sides seeking their opportunities and beginning to build their rhythm early on itself. However it was South korea who struck in as early as the 6th minute. It all began with a sublime throughball by Lee which caught German defence out and found Cho. The central midfielder calmly slotted the ball past the keeper into the bottom left corner to make it 1-0 of South Korea. Germany almost instantly began their resurgance in the attack in search of an equaliser. After coming close to levelling the scores on a number of ocassions, the side finally did so in the 42nd minute. A good looking cross by Huth into the South korean box was headed home brilliantly by Alexandra Popp who found the bottom right corner to level the scores at half time.
The second half was a highly forgetful one for Germany in particular as they failed to score a much needed second goal despite coming immensely close to one on several occasions. The side firstly had the ball in the net in the 57th minute when Popp again found the goal via a header, only for VAR to eventually chop the goal off due to being offside. Popp again was denied to everyone’s surprise. It was she yet again who found a fine cross into the South Korean box but this time her effort came off the woodwork. Germany continued to squander chances until the full time whistle as the scores remained intact with both the sides getting knocked out of the tournament. FT:- Germany 1-1 South Korea.
