Even though Fabio Paratici signed older brother Sami Khedira to Juventus, Spurs are interested in signing younger brother Rani.
Last week, 90Min reported that Tottenham is competing with Union Berlin for the transfer of Khedira. Others listed as clubs interested in Khedira include Everton, Leicester City, Liverpool, Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
All of those teams watched Union’s elimination of Ajax from the Europa League last week as a scouting opportunity. As his contract expires at the end of the season, Khedira might be a steal for Premier League teams.
With Rodrigo Bentancur out for the season with an injury, it may make sense for Tottenham to do so. Khedira may be an inexpensive option for Tottenham, while Fabio Paratici may play a pivotal role.
For Tottenham supporters, Khedira may not be the most exciting name. The 29-year-old has played practically his entire professional career in the Bundesliga, with Stuttgart, RB Leipzig, Augsburg, and now Union Berlin.
Strong and unfussy, Khedira is a no-nonsense holding midfielder who puts in a lot of effort and has a strong character (as seen by his role as Union’s vice-captain), but he may not be the most exciting player to watch.
But, Paratici, Tottenham’s director of football, has an unusual connection with Khedira. When Khedira’s brother was signed by Juventus in 2015, it was by Tottenham’s director of football.
Sami Khedira spent five years with Real Madrid before being released to play for Paratici for free. Paratici travelled all the way to Germany to seal the deal in person with Khedira’s agent.
Paratici got a steal in the older Khedira, who scored 21 goals in 145 games for Juventus. While playing in Italy, Khedira changed agents and is now represented by Denny, the younger sibling. NGM Sports.
Paratici already has a substantial connection to the representation, as Denny’s current primary client Rani. You can’t say you blame Denny and Rani for thinking this is a great opportunity to make a transfer this summer, given the number of teams showing interest.
Tottenham is an upgrade for Khedira, and Paratici may recognize in Rani some of the qualities he saw in Sami. Paratici may be able to use this past as a bargaining chip if Spurs are serious about acquiring Rani.
