Manchester United wants to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, a 33-year-old striker for Bayern Munich, is attracting attention from Manchester United
According to Florian Plettenberg, a German journalist, Bayern Munich is eager to sign Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting to a new deal. Manchester United, though, is targeting a January transfer for the 33-year-old from the Bundesliga winners.
The international player from Cameroon is under contract with Bayern Munich until the summer of 2023 but will be a free agent after the current campaign. Therefore, Choupo-Moting may be available for a steal this month.
If the 33-year-old player refuses to sign an agreement with Bayern this month, the club may contemplate selling him. The Bundesliga champions and the player’s agent are now negotiating a contract extension.
Reports indicate that negotiations have progressed well thus far, but the player has not yet made a final decision. Seemingly, he is seeking guarantees of first-team playing time for the next season, and it remains to be seen whether the Bavarian powerhouses can provide this request. Presently, it looks like a remote possibility.
It also comes as no surprise that Manchester United is interested in acquiring the player. They cut ties with Cristiano Ronaldo before the World Cup, so Erik ten Hag has to sign a new striker this month.
The Red Devils need to add more depth and talent to the final third since Marcus Rashford is the lone consistent striker at the club. Many news outlets reported a few weeks ago that Manchester United had also shown interest in signing Choupo-Moting.
Manchester United will be gunning for a top-four finish to make it into the UEFA Champions League. To finish in the top four, they’ll need to beat out teams like Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Liverpool, among others.
Choupo-Moting can go in and make an instant impact at Old Trafford thanks to his skill and expertise. This season, the 33-year-old has been outstanding, as seen by his 11 goals and three assists in 16 games played across all competitions. The Red Devils may have done well to sign him for a fair price. The 33-year-old veteran has played for a large club and is familiar with the pressures of being on a title-contending squad. Whether he chooses to pass on a new contract with Bayern in favour of a transfer to Manchester United is still up in the air.
