Resilient Madrid outplay Union Berlin narrowly in a close encounter

Real Madrid registered a nerve-cracking win over Union Berlin in their first match of the UCL 2023/24 season. The game was more or less an evenly poised one with both sides having their fair share of chances.

Real Madrid ultimately proved to be the superior of the two sides as they pulled off a crucial win at home. Real Madrid following this win have bagged their first points of this UCL season. Union Berlin meanwhile will be disappointed to not have any points in their account despite putting on a fine show.

The game began with both sides seeking their opportunities to gain some momentum early on in the match. The chances came in for both sides inside the first 10 minutes with each of the two sides failing to convert it into a goal.

Joselu came close to finding the back of the net after being fed in with multiple precise crosses from the wing. The no.9 however failed to direct any of his headers past the keeper.

The second half too saw some seriously close competition for the ball in between the players of both sides. Union Berlin kept resisting the strong attempts from the Madrid attackers thereby frustrating the home side considerably.

Joselu once again was the man for Real Madrid as he came within touching distances of a goal this time. The striker found Rodrygo’s fine pass into the box and headed it brilliantly thereby forcing a brilliant save by the Berlin keeper following which the ball hit the post and bounced back to safety.

Prior to this Rodrygo himself too had been denied by the woodwork. After several attempts on goal it was in the fourth minute of the stoppage time that Madrid finally had the goal that they had been longing for.

Valverde’s powerful hit took a couple of deflections off the Berlin defenders in the box and fell into the path of Bellingham who smashed it into an open net to give Madrid all three points. F.T :- Real Madrid 1-0 Union Berlin.
