The deal got finalized as Sporting will be paying €18m with €3m add-ons to one of the best midfielders of the previous season in Serie A. Hjulmand’s performance helped Lecce get the promotion from Serie B and then retained their status. He made five assists in 36 appearances for Salentini.
Hjulmand proved his value with them and in a very polite way expressed his desire to try out new experiences, so they asked him that if the opportunity arose, they would let him go, explained Director Corvino. They accepted lower than his real value to give him what he wanted.
Sporting signs Morten Hjulmand in a good deal
Morten Hjulmand has been one of the best midfielders in Serie A last season for his side Lecce. Lecce made a huge profit in 2021 buying the Denmark international from Austrian side Admira Wacker in January 2021 for just €170,000.
The 24-year-old impressed many with his performance last season and was a hot property on the transfer market this summer. Lazio, Milan, and Fenerbahce, along with a few Premier League sides had shown their interest in the young talent in the transfer window.
The Danish midfielder started his club career with Admira Wacker in 2018. The midfielder participated in all league games in the first half year at the club except for one game. He made his next move to Italian club Lecce in 2021. Lecce made a huge profit signing him at a low price and getting the best of his services in the season.
Lecce signed a four-year deal at €170,000 with Hjulmand in the second tier Serie B at the time. Lecce’s promotion to the top tier is believed to have been a major contribution from the Danish midfielder. He made a total of 35 appearances for the Italian side in Serie A and assisted five times.
Lecce is yet to get his first call in the Denmark international team. He is on the fringes of getting his first senior cap. The youngster has been a promising talent for his teams and Sporting will also be expecting the best from the midfielder.
