Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a summer transfer for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber
Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly considering a summer transfer for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.
According to 90Min, Timber is hoping to leave Amsterdam the next summer. It has been reported that Timber has instructed his agents to begin talking to potential suitors well in advance of the transfer deadline.
Interest is high from the get-go; Manchester United have been watching Timber for some time, and Erik ten Hag is a great fan of his from their days together at Ajax.
Ten Hag reportedly adores Timber and would “take him tomorrow” if a trade between United and Ajax could be finalized. The likes of Liverpool and Tottenham are interested, and so are Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid, and Marseille.
Timber’s current deal expires in 2025, making it very easy to sign with a Premier League club this summer. Timber, at age 21, is a promising young central defender, and Virgil van Dijk would be thrilled to have him join Liverpool.
According to Van Dijk, Timber is a “fantastic player” with “so much promise” that he’s going somewhere. Tottenham may be a better fit for him than Liverpool, despite Liverpool’s interest.
Josko Gvardiol, Levi Colwill, Max Kilman, and Nayef Aguerd have all been linked to Liverpool as potential left-sided defenders this summer. Timber is right-footed and might have a similar profile to Joe Gomez, but Liverpool seems to be more interested in a different sort of defender.
Spurs use a back three, so if they sign Timber, he may go to the right side, where he played for Atalanta, and Cristian Romero would move to the centre.
Timber can provide a lot of speed to Tottenham’s defense, and the club will be hoping he has better luck than Davinson Sanchez, the last defender Spurs purchased from Ajax.
This is a smart decision for Spurs, but only if they want to keep the same defensive front going ahead. While Manchester United seem to be the most interested team, Liverpool and Tottenham are also contenders in the fight for Timber.
