FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 – England vs Colombia – Match Report
England registered an emphatic victory over Colombia in the quarter final match of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 at the Stadium Australia in Sydney. England following this win have booked their slots for the semi finals wherein they shall be facing off against England in another epic encounter. England clearly were the better of the two sides as they dominated the game on majority of the moments. The side enjoyed 61% of the ball possession and created four big chances overall. Colombia though displayed courageous performances throughout the world cup so far, the side will have to walk back home.
The game began and so did England’s brilliance. The side came close to opening the scoring with just 6 minutes on the clock. Heml and Russo both saw their shots from six yards being blocked by a melee of defenders one after the other, which was followed by the flag raising up. England kept figuring out ways to attack the Colombian net for the first half an hour without any turbulences.
Colombia did seemingly have their chance of the match in the 38th minutes. Caicedo did well to squeeze through the defence but followed it up with a tame shot that was easily collected by the keeper. However the side did eventually break the deadlock in the 44th minute. Leicy Santos put in an outswinging ball which floated over Earps and ended up dropping in at the back post.
England managed to level the scores in the dying minutes of the first half thanks to a stroke of luck. The ball initially dropped to Russo who prodded towards goal. Perez seemed to have it under control but the ball somehow found it’s way under her and Hemp was on hand to tuck it home.
The second half began with the scores levelled at 1-1. Both sides seemed equally desperate to take the lead. It was England who struck again to come from behind and take the lead against the odds in the 63rd minute. Stanway slided it into the right channel followed by Russo brilliantly shooting into the far bottom corner to make it 2-1 for England.
The game began losing its intensity ever since England took the lead. Neither of the side made any serious attempts to score thereon. England did well to maintain their one goal cushion and eventually did so until the final whistle was blown. FT:- England 2-1 Colombia.
