Diogo Monteiro, a defender for Servette, just completed a physical with Leeds United and is close to finalizing a transfer to the Whites. Sky Sports reports that Monteiro had his physical this afternoon.
The Daily Mail reported late last week that Leeds had stepped up their negotiations to sign Monteiro before the transfer deadline. How much Leeds is paying for Monteiro in transfer fees is unknown, although Servette will have a sell-on clause.
With time running out, Leeds is trying to finalize two signings: Weston McKennie from Juventus and Monteiro from Brazil. Originally from Geneva, Switzerland, Monteiro joined the Servette organization in 2017 after previously playing for Etoile Carouge.
Denis Zakaria, Kevin Mbabu, and ex-Arsenal defender Philippe Senderos are just some of the players to come up through the Servette youth system. There are now huge expectations for the young defender Monteiro, who seems to be their next big thing.
Monteiro has earned three appearances at the Under-19 level for Portugal despite his Swiss birthplace. The young man has reached the age of majority over the last weekend and may finalize his relocation to Elland Road.
Monteiro has appeared in three Swiss Cup matches and three league games for Servette so far this season. The central defender has made seven appearances for the first squad and is reportedly close to a transfer to the Premier League. Leeds’ ambition is to mold Monteiro into a first-team prospect, as they did with Pascal Struijk.
While the attention this month has been on recruiting new players for the first team, the acquisition of Monteiro shows that Victor Orta is still planning for the future.
