After being let go by Leeds United on Monday, Craig Burley has speculated that Jesse Marsch might replace Bob Bradley as coach of the United States men’s national team.

Having been fired from RB Leipzig and then Leeds, the former Scotland international said Marsch “isn’t in the ideal situation” to win the USMNT post. He made his comments to the US-based network ESPN.

He did, however, make it plain that the USMNT’s governing organization “does what it wants,” so the outcome is not surprising.

In the wake of the bombshell allegations from Gio Reyna’s parents and the expiration of Gregg Berhalter’s contract, interim coach Antony Hudson has taken over for the United States national team.

Although Marsch kept Leeds up when they seemed doomed to go down under Marcelo Bielsa last season, these last few matches haven’t done him much favour.

Burley argues that the next manager of the United States national team (USMNT) must be the right choice because of the enormous pressure that will come with the United States hosting of the World Cup in the near future.

With a young, inexperienced Erling Haaland, who would later become one of the most feared strikers in world football, at his disposal, Marsch was gaining quite a name in Salzburg.

But he’s received some criticism recently, so it’s unlikely he’ll be given a major role with the USMNT very soon. Because he is American and still one of the finest in his own country, he would be towards the head of the line.

But ultimately, with the USA hosting the 2026 World Cup, they may need a proven champion in the dugout who can help them reach far more than simply the round of 16 in the sport’s most prestigious tournament.
