Clinton Morrison believes that the loss of Sander Berge at the end of the January transfer window would be a “major setback” for Paul Heckingbottom and Sheffield United
According to Clinton Morrison, losing Sander Berge to teams like Newcastle United and Liverpool late in the January transfer window would be a “major loss” for Paul Heckingbottom’s Sheffield United.
Several Premier League teams are aiming to finalize a trade for the 24-year-old Berge before today’s deadline, and the former Crystal Palace striker has called him “superb.” Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are reportedly considering a deal for Berge, joining Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool, as well as Graham Potter and Chelsea.
Berge was not included in the matchday squad for Sheffield United’s thrilling FA Cup tie against non-league Wrexham on Sunday, which may indicate that he may be on the move before Tuesday’s deadline.
Paul Heckingbottom fielded a quality Sheffield United lineup, but the fact that Berge wasn’t even on the bench says something may happen in the next day or two.
Morrison told Sky Sports News (29/01/23) that he doesn’t think the midfielder’s potential departure would have any impact on the Blades’ inevitable bid for promotion to the Championship.
“If they were to lose Sander Berge, then it would be a huge blow, but they do have players,” said Morrison.
“They can still get promoted, but it’s a big loss because he is a superb player. He is a big player for them in that midfield. He can score goals. Drives with the ball well. He carries it well, so it would be a big loss if they do lose him. If they do lose him, then it will be hard to bring someone in, so they will be trying to do work as well,” he added.
As the winter transfer season nears its close, it seems as if Jurgen Klopp will not be supported by Liverpool’s ownership. While it may be bad news for Reds supporters, it’s great for Newcastle.
