Chelsea Transfer News: Is Manchester City Willing to sign Mateo Kovacic?

Chelsea Transfer News: Mateo Kovacic, a midfielder for Chelsea, allegedly has his representatives in negotiations with Manchester City about a permanent move during the forthcoming summer transfer window.

Since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2018, first on loan and then permanently for £40 million in 2019, 28-year-old Kovacic has been an integral part of the West London club’s success. He has won four titles with his team thus far.

The 93-cap Croatian international, a right-footed technical operator is known for his vision and dribbling, has been linked to a move away from Chelsea. Earlier in the season, rumours circulated that both Manchester United and AC Milan were interested in signing the player.

With just 14 months left on his current deal, the Blues reportedly want to cash in on the former Inter Milan player. N1 reports that Kovacic’s camp is now in London for preliminary contract negotiations with Manchester City ahead of a possible summer move. Pep Guardiola, manager of the Citizens, is said to be a huge fan of the midfielder, who is valued at £30 million.

Manchester City have made signing Kovacic a top priority this summer, despite competition for their attention from clubs like Barcelona for Ilkay Gundogan and Aston Villa for Kalvin Phillips. Given the current status of the Croatian’s contract at Stamford Bridge, the Premier League winners are optimistic about reaching a deal below the player’s price tag.

If Kovacic were to join Guardiola’s squad in the near future, he would be used as a double pivot with Rodri. The Chelsea midfielder is more comfortable playing in a deeper position, but he can also serve as a playmaker up top if necessary. The 2018 FIFA World Cup finalist has scored six times and assisted on fourteen more for Chelsea in 217 appearances.
