Chelsea is looking to sign Marcus Thuram
Upon becoming a free agent this summer, Marcus Thuram of Borussia Monchengladbach and France has caught the attention of Premier League club Chelsea, who are considering making a winter transfer
Reportedly, Chelsea is interested in signing Marcus Thuram, a striker now playing for Borussia Monchengladbach but who will be a free agent at the end of the season. In light of Armando Broja’s long-term injury, the Blues have reportedly maintained the World Cup finalist on the list of attackers they could move for in the coming days of the current transfer window, as reported by journalist Simon Phillips (via Si & Dan Talk Chelsea).
The Bundesliga club’s current term with the 25-year-old is slated to expire next summer, and the player has already informed Borussia Monchengladbach that he will not be signing a new contract. This makes him one of the most sought-after players of the January transfer window.
The France international and oldest son of France icon Lilian has had a terrific goal-scoring season with Die Fohlen, tallying 13 goals and four assists from only 17 games across all competitions. He was also a key player for his team in the World Cup when he contributed an assist in the championship game.
Given his towering flexibility, powerful physical presence as center forward, and superb hold-up play, as well as his beneficial contract rebel position, it is easy to understand why so many elite teams are wooing him.
Reports indicate that Borussia Monchengladbach would rather cash in on a €15 million sale this month than risk losing the player for nothing in the summer. Although Inter had been considered the favourite to sign the World Cup finalist, United has now emerged as the frontrunner. Now, Chelsea is competing for his signing and is eager to sign him.
Even after a massive purchasing spree in the offseason, Graham Potter’s Chelsea side is yet to find their footing this season. The Blues coach is well aware of the need to address the team’s lack of depth, which is why they are interested in Thuram.
Since Armando Broja’s recent ACL injury is expected to keep him out for the remainder of the season, Potter has just Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to choose from as a true centre striker. Because of this, the Blues swooped in quickly to sign David Datro Fofana from Molde.
Even still, at age 20, he is undoubtedly a potential star, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Chelsea pursue other offensive reinforcements. The 33-year-old Aubameyang has only scored once in the Premier League for the Blues, so they have been begging for reinforcements.
The minimal transfer cost associated with acquiring Thuram in January makes him seem like a no-brainer for the club, which would be obtaining an in-form forward at no risk. Because of his versatility, he may be a great addition to the Potter cast. He can play both up top and on the left flank. His unquestionable offensive prowess isn’t the only thing that’s drawn people’s attention, however; he also seems to work nonstop. Given the competition from Man United, Bayern, and Inter Milan, Chelsea will have their job cut out for them if they want to lure him to Stamford Bridge.
