Calvin Bassey said he may have signed with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal in the summer of 2022
According to a comment in De Volksrant, Calvin Bassey said he may have signed with Mikel Arteta at Arsenal in the summer of 2022. Despite rumours to the contrary, Bassey did indeed leave Rangers for Ajax this past summer.
In October 2022, Own Goal Nigeria reported an unidentified source from the agent representing Bassey claiming that “Arsenal approached” them, and that they “made it known to Rangers”.
The same report claims that Aston Villa and West Ham United were also interested in signing the young player before he decided to leave Rangers for Ajax.
Ajax sent out £19.6 million to Rangers as a transfer price for Bassey (SkySports) The 23-year-old, who can play centre defence or left back, has now revealed that he was offered a transfer to the Premier League in the previous summer.

This points to an attempt to sign Bassey by Arsenal, and an apparent rejection of the club by the Nigerian international. We don’t think Arsenal’s lack of Calvin Bassey has been particularly noticeable this year.
Because they’ve been so solid defensively, Arsenal has a real shot at the Premier League crown. Arsenal’s starting lineup at centre defence presently consists of William Saliba, Gabriel, and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back.
Left back for the Scotland national team Kieran Tierney’s continued presence on the Arsenal squad is crucial. Although Arsenal was unable to buy Bassey from Rangers last summer, we do not believe they have lost out on anything.
