Borussia Monchengladbach director Roland Virkus has told Sky Germany that the club would “do everything” to keep Bundesliga star Marcus Thuram despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur

Borussia Monchengladbach director Roland Virkus has told Sky Germany that the club would “do everything” to keep Bundesliga star Marcus Thuram despite interest from Tottenham Hotspur, Newcastle United, and Aston Villa of the Premier League. Thuram is a member of France’s national team.

The Gladbach assistant coach, Oliver Neuville, is probably not getting his hopes up. Some time ago, Neuville said that Thuram was “likely” to get bids from some of the major teams on the continent. He thinks it would be “tough” for Gladbach to keep him on when the summer is through.

In July, Thuram’s employment will come to an end.

Unai Emery reportedly wants to bring a talented wide attacker to Villa Park and has been in contact with the former Guingamp talisman’s representatives, according to BILD. In comparison to the club’s other objectives, Thuram, who is free, is far more economical. For instance, players like Real Betis’ Luiz Henrique and Athletic Bilbao’s lightning-quick Nico Williams are worth more than £40 million each.

“I can’t promise that both (Thuram and left-back Ramy Bensebaini) will stay with us beyond the season. But we will try to talk to both of them again,” Virkus explains.

“We will try everything (to keep them). But there may also be a point in time when we just can’t keep up. When it comes to sums that Borussia simply can’t afford,” he added.

Spurs have had their eye on Thuram for some time, and with good reason: the German international has gotten off to a blistering start in the Bundesliga and has been called a “world-class” potential. Arnaut Danjuma joined Antonio Conte’s London giants in the middle of the year. Whether or not the Villarreal loanee performs well enough to win a permanent deal might affect their pursuit of Thuram.

As of the end of the 2022/23 season, Thuram has scored 10 goals and assisted on three more in 17 league appearances. Without Erling Haaland, Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona, or Christopher Nkunku at Chelsea, the Golden Boot seems like a very plausible possibility.
