Do Newcastle United Want Neymar Jr?

According to reports, Newcastle United have reached out to Neymar Jr.’s representatives at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) about a possible summer transfer. The Brazilian’s salary, though, might make a trade tough to achieve.

Newcastle United have been reported by 90min to be interested in signing the Parisian club’s number 10 this summer. The Magpies have a good chance of qualifying for next year’s UEFA Champions League. The Magpies are looking to make a splashy acquisition before the next season. Although a bid for Al-Nassr superstar Cristiano Ronaldo was explored internally, the Portuguese club decided not to pursue a move for the 38-year-old player because of his age.

However, Neymar is just in his early 30s and still a top-tier talent on the international stage. Several clubs in the Premier League might make a bid for him if he leaves PSG in the summer. In 2017, the Brazilian star signed with the French club for a record-breaking €222 million. Since then, he’s played 173 games and contributed to 118 goals and 77 assists.

On the other hand, he may be leaving this summer. It’s unclear whether Newcastle can afford the player’s huge contract, despite their apparent desire. According to Capology, the former Barcelona star makes slightly over €1 million each week now.

Neymar was Paris Saint-Germain’s go-to scorer at the beginning of the season. The Brazilian’s exceptional form was the team’s backbone; he scored 18 goals and sent out 17 assists in 29 games before breaking his ankle. As a consequence, he was sidelined for the rest of the season and required surgery. Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe have carried the load for the Parisians in his absence.

There is no questioning the Brazilian’s enormous skill, but he has had trouble staying fit throughout his career. This season, he’s had repeated ankle problems. It is unclear if the most recent operation will finally resolve those problems.
