Jamie Carragher said that Steven Gerrard is head and shoulders above his former England teammates Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes
Some of the finest managers in the world agree with former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher that Steven Gerrard is head and shoulders above his former England teammates Frank Lampard and Paul Scholes.
During his career, Carragher shared the pitch with all three of these midfielders when the Three Lions took the field. The three members of the ‘golden generation’ all played together for the national team for a long time, so the question of who was the greatest is one that will never be settled.
The whole of Jamie Carragher’s career was spent with Liverpool, much like Steven Gerrard’s. The fact that he is receiving attention from the Premier League’s top managers, he says, is what puts his accomplished comrade ahead of Scholes and Lampard.

Since the host, Peter Crouch is a former Reds striker, it’s no surprise that he agrees wholeheartedly with Carragher. While playing for England, he was in the same locker room as Gerrard.
It would be intriguing to see whether Carragher still thought the same of the Liverpool legend if events had been different and Gerrard had moved for other clubs.
Speaking about the matter on The Peter Crouch Podcast, Carragher said: “It’s not even close is it? People think I don’t like Frank Lampard and I don’t like Paul Scholes. You know when this debate comes up, and I go, ‘They were amazing players, but it’s not even a debate, it’s not even close.’ I’ll tell you what kills the debate. Alex Ferguson tried to sign him (Gerrard) and so did Jose Mourinho. And they had Scholes and Lampard.”
Throughout their careers, Scholes, Lampard, and Gerrard became household names among football fans after making their debuts in the 1990s for their respective teams.
Paul Scholes had two separate periods at Manchester United, first retiring at the conclusion of the 2011 season and then making a spectacular return in 2013. After retiring from playing, the 11-time Premier League champion has tried his hand at punditry and now makes infrequent appearances on Sky Sports’ programming.
Before joining Chelsea in 2001, Frank Lampard made his debut for West Ham United in 1995. He scored more goals than anyone else in Blues history, cementing his status as a club icon. Before retiring in 2016, he played briefly for Manchester City and New York City FC. Lampard has dabbled with football management since then.
Liverpool had Steven Gerrard on their roster from 1998 to 2015. In 2005, he led his team to a Champions League title with some memorable performances. He had successful periods as manager for Rangers FC and Aston Villa after retirement but is now unemployed.
