An On-air Reporter Suggestions That Tottenham Prefers A Particular Type Of Manager, With Postecoglou As The Only Exception
For their reconstruction, Tottenham Hotspur is taking their time and focused on hiring a young coach, with Celtic’s Ange Postecoglou being the lone exception. Gary Jacob, a reporter for The Times, reportedly said as much when he spoke to beIN Sports about Antonio Conte’s breakdown.
After his team’s 3-3 tie against Southampton on Saturday, Conte unleashed a shocking rant on his players. Many believe Conte will leave at the end of the summer when his contract is up, or perhaps sooner.
Jacob’s comments provide a glimpse into Tottenham’s thinking as they search for a new manager to replace Conte. In Jacob’s view, Tottenham is looking primarily to hire young, up-and-coming managers who will take a more measured approach than the likes of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.
As far as Jacob is concerned, Ange Postecoglou is the only true outlier, but he still conforms to the kind of coach Tottenham is looking for to replace Conte. Because of his successful tenure at Celtic, Postecoglou has garnered a lot of attention.
The Australian’s transfer to Celtic from Yokohama F. Marinos in 2021 wasn’t exactly a consolation prize, but the Bhoys’ failure to get Eddie Howe had necessitated a replacement. The switch to Postecoglou at Celtic paid off handsomely, as the club won the league championship last season and is on the verge of repeating the feat this year.
Celtic’s play under Postecoglou has been excellent, and it’s the type of play that Spurs supporters have missed under Conte. The 57-year-old doesn’t exactly suit the “youth” image Spurs seek, but his ideas are so forward-thinking that they may be ready to overlook this.
But, Postecoglou is not an easy catch; he recently told The Sun that his longevity at Celtic would surprise many. Postecoglou will only leave Celtic for a premium deal, and Tottenham might be that offer.
Celtic supporters needn’t fret quite yet, as we’re sure Tottenham has other priorities, but Postecoglou’s talent will undoubtedly get attention from Premier League teams.
