If Michael Carrick doesn’t get Leeds United promoted, then the club will move quickly to sign Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom
If Michael Carrick doesn’t get Leeds United promoted, then the club will move quickly to sign Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom. TalkSPORT claims this, saying that Akpom is now highly sought after player.
Rivals Everton and Crystal Palace are also interested in a summer transfer with Leeds. According to reports, half a dozen Premier League teams are interested in Akpom, but their pursuit of him depends on whether or not Boro gets promoted.
Carrick has done wonders for the Riverside Stadium squad, helping them rise to third place in the Championship. Boro still hasn’t given up on automatic promotion, and Carrick’s squad has a good chance of making the playoffs.
Boro will be hoping to be in the promotion mix by the end of the season, so any intentions to sign Akpom will have to wait. By exercising a one-year contract option, Akpom is now committed to Boro until 2024.
That happened after Akpom flourished under Carrick, and he has since scored 21 goals in 28 Championship appearances. It looks that Carrick has been instrumental in helping the 27-year-old realize his full potential, which he showed during his time at Arsenal.
To be honest, not many people saw this coming from Akpom. The former England U-21 international was loaned to Greek club PAOK after he scored only five goals in his debut season with Boro.
It’s possible that Chuba Akpom would have been on the outskirts of the squad if Boro had completed a late deal for Preston North End striker Emil Riis. Instead, Akpom is on fire offensively and, after years of flattery, he has finally reached the pinnacle of his profession.
While at Arsenal, Akpom was once highly regarded despite just making four appearances for the main squad. Akpom will want to play in the Premier League next season for any team that will have him, whether it is Boro, Leeds, Everton, Palace, or someone else.
