Cody Gakpo, a January signing for Liverpool, has already earned a spot in Alan Shearer’s Premier League Team of the Week thanks to his two goals in the Reds’ 4-0 rout of Manchester United on Sunday at Anfield.
After contributing to 30 goals in 24 games for PSV, 23-year-old Gakpo was signed by Liverpool in January. The dynamic forward who shone for the Netherlands at the World Cup has joined the Reds.
A sluggish beginning was to be expected. Gakpo went without a goal or an assist in his first six games. Nevertheless, in his last six games, he has scored four goals, two of which came in victories against Newcastle and the Merseyside derby. Then, two on Sunday versus United.
His first was a well-taken goal that saw him cut inside and curl past David De Gea. The second was indicative of a confident player after Mo Salah had just flipped Lisandro Martinez on his head. Shearer feels Gakpo is currently performing at his best.
Including the Netherlands ace in his Premier League Team of the Week, Shearer said about Gakpo: “Now starting to fire on all cylinders, adding another two goals. He was too hot for Man Utd to handle.” Shearer also included Robertson.
There were rumours that Gakpo will be transferred to the Premier League over the previous summer. In addition to being interested, teams like Leeds United, Southampton, and even Manchester United made serious offers. Yet he stayed at PSV and has since transferred to Anfield. That is a move that appears to have paid off. Putting on the former No. 18 jersey of countryman Dirk Kuyt, Gakpo looked menacing on Sunday. Having Salah and Darwin Nunez together in the front three harkened back to classic Liverpool.
