A summer transfer for Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey is being considered by Newcastle United
A summer transfer for Galatasaray defender Sacha Boey is being considered by Newcastle United. Turkish Football reports that Newcastle has contacted Galatasaray about a possible transfer.
Boey, a Frenchman now signed with Galatasaray until 2025, is said to be valued at roughly €20 million (£18 million). Boey, who is just 22, has played completely at right back for Galatasaray this season and has started 20 games.
Newcastle’s interest in another right-back seems a little unexpected. The Magpies have previously recruited Kieran Trippier, a right-back, and have now added Harrison Ashby, his likely successor.
It would be unexpected for Newcastle to bring another right back into the fold when they so desperately need more offensive threats in the final third.
The only plausible explanation for this rumour is that Newcastle intends to loan out Ashby next season and that they see Boey as a better-proven alternative than Trippier. Boey has since joined Rennes.
Boey left Rennes in 2021 for Galatasaray after just eight league appearances. Boey was reportedly interested in a job offer in Scotland, but he was also considering other options.
According to L’Equipe, Celtic made a strong effort to recruit Boey and even gave him terms on a transfer to Parkhead, but he ultimately decided against taking the offer. The attempt was apparently thwarted by an agent, which allowed Boey to go to Turkey.
That summer, Celtic also lost out on Eddie Howe, who turned off a transfer to Parkhead. Although Celtic is content with Ange Postecoglou at the moment, in a parallel universe Howe and Boey form a partnership at Celtic in 2021. As it turns out, the two may team up this summer in a surprising turn of events at Newcastle.
