Brits, who was born in 2007, has been training with AFC Wimbledon’s first team and was even a substitute in a London Senior Cup match in October. Unbelievable, especially considering he is a goalie at his age.
His departure from England’s U16 team earlier this season likely drew attention from foreigners. In his debut for his country in November, a 1-0 loss to Belgium, he played the full game in goal.
Brits are on the cusp of joining Sunderland’s first team, which is where Sunderland’s youthful talent has excelled in the Championship. A mere five days before Christmas, he earned his second England U16 cap by keeping a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory against Turkey.
But Wimbledon has to do more to maintain British fans. That’s because a few teams at the very top of the English league system have shown interest. Tottenham and Manchester United are two examples. We’ll have to wait and see.
How could Britons best proceed? Should he stay at Wimbledon and try to make the first team, or should he go somewhere else, like Tottenham or United, and try to make a name for himself in the youth system?
His greatest bet, obviously, is to try to crack Wimbledon’s first team. He has a better chance of seeing action at this level than at any other. But how soon can we expect it to occur? His development might be accelerated by Spurs and United.
The road to the Tottenham first team seems to be clear as well. Hugo Lloris might leave this summer, while Fraser Forster is already in his mid-30s. Backup goalkeepers like Brandon Austin, Alfie Whiteman, and the others aren’t viable solutions for the long haul.
