Jamie Carragher thinks Liverpool made a mistake by acquiring Gakpo from PSV in the January transfer window
Astonished that Jurgen Klopp has brought Cody Gakpo to Liverpool, Jamie Carragher has written in The Telegraph that he cannot believe it. The Sky Sports analyst thinks Liverpool made a mistake by acquiring Gakpo from PSV in the January transfer window.
Last month, the club that has previously won the Premier League and Liverpool acquired Gakpo from PSV. Sky Sports reports that Liverpool spent £35 million to get the 23-year-old, who is being paid £120,000 weekly (Football Insider).
As of now, the striker has played three Premier League games for Liverpool without scoring or assisting in a goal. In addition to those league matches, Gakpo has made three FA Cup appearances for the Reds.
Carragher wrote: “In attack, Díaz started his Liverpool brilliantly but Núñez is a work in progress, and I am baffled watching Gakpo’s early performances. Gakpo is not a typical Klopp signing, lacking lightning pace and the capacity to lead a high press. Why commit up to £45 million to someone who will be on the bench when Díaz and Diogo Jota are fit? Especially when another area of the team needed strengthening?”
Many Reds supporters, like Jamie Carragher, will wonder why Liverpool added Cody Gakpo when they had just signed Darwin Nunez the previous summer. Nonetheless, Gakpo is perhaps the finest European forward at his early age. The two superstars, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah are far beyond their primes at this point. Although Gakpo has gotten off to a slow start at Liverpool, he is still young (23), so there is hope for his future. To see Gakpo at full bloom, it may be another year or two.
