Callum Wilson is perplexed by West Ham’s transfer tactics in the wake of reports linking Youssef En-Nesyri
After hearing that West Ham United are interested in Youssef En-Nesyri of Sevilla, striker Callum Wilson said, “I don’t see why they constantly push for a similar profile striker.”
The Newcastle United striker said on The Footballer’s Football Podcast that West Ham always chooses the “wrong choice” when it comes to bolstering their front line. Moyes is hoping to add to his squad in January.
Michail Antonio, who was chatting with Wilson on the latter’s weekly podcast, is having a rough year offensively, with just two goals in the Premier League thus far.
The rumours that the Jamaican international will be leaving the club this month are likely due to this, albeit the new kid on the block, Gianluca Scamacca, isn’t exactly thriving either.
There have been rumours that Youssef En-Nesyri, a great player for Sevilla who would cost £17.5 million, may replace the 24-year-old who joined the club during the summer transfer window but has only scored three goals in the Premier League.
“The one thing for me, whenever I see West Ham sign a striker or linked with a striker, it’s always the similar profile,” said Wilson.
“In terms of what type of striker you are trying to buy, it’s always tall and gangly centre-forward. I think sometimes you are looking at the wrong option because the Premier League is difficult sometimes, especially for a centre-forward, it’s not an easy position.
I just think if you have someone who is this same profile as this En-Nesyri, and Scamacca, I would probably say are similar looking players, in terms of stature and the way that they play, then you go for a totally different option if you are going to have three.
You don’t go for three of the same because what’s the point? You are trying to have different options. Different games require different strikers, ones that are going to drop in short and ones that are going to run in-behind. You need to keep it mixed up.
I am not part of your recruitment, maybe I need to come down and start filling up your club with good players,” Wilson laughed whilst talking to Antonio.
If the London team adds a third striker, Wilson explained why they need to find someone ‘different.’ This has been a problem for a very long time, from Upton Park all the way to the London Stadium, therefore it is not unique to David Moyes’ tenure.
Recent successful attackers include former winger Michail Antonio, centre-forward Marko Arnautovic, and winger Jarrod Bowen, who were all converted to the position by Moyes.
From Simone Zaza to Marouane Chamakh, East London has not exactly produced a plethora of goal-scoring forwards.
