Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester City was preceded by a hamstring injury sustained by fullback Ryan Sessegnon in training
According to reports, Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester City was preceded by a hamstring injury sustained by fullback Ryan Sessegnon in training. Sessegnon might be out for up to six weeks.
As reported by Football London, Tottenham’s captain, Hugo Lloris, will be sidelined for at least two months, and now Ryan Sessegnon has joined him on the injured list.
Although Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United also lost this weekend, Tottenham’s 4-1 defeat to Leicester at the King Power Stadium was a big blow to Antonio Conte’s ambitions of a top-four finish because of the absence of both players.
Sessegnon, an attacking fullback bought by Tottenham from Fulham in 2019 for £25 million, has been a mainstay for Spurs this season, making 23 appearances across all competitions while contributing with two goals and an assist.
While Ivan Perisic has been Spurs’ main left wingback this season, Sessegnon’s injury is a huge setback for the north London club as they enter a critical stretch of the season with the resumption of the UEFA Champions League this month.
Losing a quality squad player like Sessegnon due to injury might be huge with Sheffield United on the horizon in the FA Cup. And with few options in the wide areas, Conte may find himself in trouble if Perisic overextends himself.
Given that Conte does not have a suitable alternative for the experienced winger, Sessegnon’s injury might present significant difficulties for Perisic. The Croatian international will now likely play the bulk of games till the final whistle.
While others may be able to fill in, Sessegnon’s absence for the next six weeks is likely to send shockwaves across the Tottenham squad and increase the likelihood of serious injuries, such as to Perisic or another defender.
