Despite Piero Hincapie signing a new deal with Bayer Leverkusen in recent weeks, Fabrizio Romano claims that Tottenham is still interested in signing the defender.
Leverkusen has much leverage in this issue since Hincapie’s new contract with the club does not include a release clause. Leverkusen is unlikely to let the Ecuadorian depart on the cheap, so any team interested in signing him will have to bargain with them. After all, he’s done a great job over the last year, even being called “tremendous” lately.
As one of Europe’s most promising young defenders, Hincapie is swiftly becoming a household name. He’s done well since joining Leverkusen from Talleres de Cordoba in 2021.
Spurs might need some help in the backline, and Hincapie, a left-footed central defender who can also play the ball, could provide that. Spurs would want to sign the 20-year-old, but Leverkusen now has all the aces.
Clement Lenglet’s lacklustre performance and Ben Davies’ natural preference for the left-back position have made the Spurs’ left side a vulnerability defensively this season.
They could need some quality and grit in that region of the pitch, and adding Hincapie would help. However, they will have to do a significant effort to persuade Leverkusen to sell, and when he signed a new deal, they may have to pay a premium to get the services of the promising young South American.
Even if Tottenham’s pursuit of Hincapie has been set back by the defender’s new contract, it’s evident that the club still has an interest in him. It will be challenging, but not impossible, to close this transaction.
