After Saturday’s 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers in Southampton, manager Nathan Jones was fired after just three months in charge.
The Saints were in desperate need of three points on Saturday, and thanks to a new player they signed in January, Carlos Alcaraz, they got them.
Instead of building on the momentum created by Mario Lemina’s dismissal, Southampton’s defensive effort crumbled. Wolves were behind 1-0 until a hilarious own goal by Jan Bednarek, and then a late winner by newcomer Joao Gomes gave the visitors the victory.
After the final buzzer, the crowd booed loudly to express their displeasure, and Jones paid the price for it with his job.
Jones joined the club in November, after being brought in to replace Ralph Hasenhuttl at Luton Town. However, Jones has been fired after Southampton’s dismal record of 9 losses and 5 victories in his 14 games in charge.
One rumour from early in the season claimed that Southampton likes Jesse Marsch for the manager position, although it is still unknown whom they would approach.
Back in October, The Times claimed that Southampton was interested in hiring Marsch away from Leeds United. Although Southampton ultimately decided to hire Jones, the Saints may still be interested in Marsch.
The former coach for Leeds, who is from the United States, was let go only days ago. Although it first seemed unlikely that the club would fork out the cash to pry him away from Leeds in search of a successor for Ralph Hasenhuttl, doing so now seems to be a more likely scenario.
Southampton’s interest in Marsch may have dwindled since his failures with Leeds, but with the Saints in need of a rapid solution, the former Red Bull Salzburg coach might be in the running for a quick return to the Premier League.
